CRM Software: Using Connections in Dynamics CRM 2011
Posted by Bill Goulette on Thu, Feb 17, 2011
CRM software from Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 had a feature known as Relationship Roles which allowed you to link Accounts, Contacts and Opportunities with each other. This was nice, but only being able to use the three entities was limiting. Now with Connections in 2011, you can set up a connection between any entity in the system, including custom ones. Besides the ability to connect any entity, Connections allows customizable categories and advanced find support. To connect an entity, simply use the Add Connection button available in the ribbon.
Creating a Connection Role is important before you create a connection between two records. The connection role is the link between the two records you are trying to connect. Examples: Accountant, Parent, Partner, Employer. Connection Roles are setup in Settings > Customizations > Customize the System > Connection Roles. Then provide a name for the connection and provide a Connection Category (Business, Family, Social). What happens to Relationship Roles if you are upgrading from 4.0 CRM software? They will remain available for use as they are in your current system. They will not be enabled by default for new installations of CRM 2011 software, and it does not appear they will be available at all in future versions.
