A common question whenever a new version of Microsoft CRM Software product comes out is whether or not it makes sense to upgrade before the first hotfix. In the case of Dynamics CRM 2011, a compelling case for immediate upgrade is the fact that the delineation between the professional and enterprise licensing has been removed, so upgrading from CRM 4.0 professional to CRM 2011 CRM softwares automatically yields the enterprise features. This is helpful when you are considering multi-tenancy saving you some money if you were thinking of sticking with version 4.0 and upgrading to Enterprise.
CRM 2011 has a new set of minimum requirements as you may very well have expected. In particular, the server must be of x64 architecture or compatible dual-core 1.5 GHz processor. If you are running a CRM 4.0 system on a 32 bit machine the upgrade process allows you to build out the new 64 bit server and migrate your 4.0 system to the new 2011 server resulting in an upgrade of the 4.0 database in the process.
